RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
